On May 10, 2017, Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran joined a growing number of voices calling for the state legislature to convene a special session on medical marijuana so it can pass legislation regarding the program’s implementation and regulation.

The calls for a special session come after negotiations over the state’s medical marijuana program broke down in the eleventh hour, causing the legislative session to expire before any legislation could be passed.

“I think there should be a special session on medical marijuana,” Corcoran told the Times/Herald.

Senate President Joe Negron echoed Corcoran’s opinion. “I think the Legislature does have a responsibility to be involved in that implementation, so I think that’s an option we’ll look at.”

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Gwen Graham has joined Corcoran and Negron in their calls for the legislature to convene a special session on medical marijuana, and so have medical marijuana advocates John Morgan and Ben Pollara, who have apparently made peace after a recent falling out.

When it comes to marijuana enforcement, it’s no secret that racial disparities persist even though black and white communities use marijuana at similar rates. The most recent reminder of this comes from the Old Dominion State, where Virginia marijuana arrests continue to disproportionately affect black communities.
