Even Australia’s Medical Marijuana Poster Boy Can’t Get the Drug

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • But in recent months, while routinely using cannabis, Mr. Carter has gotten his first taste of independent adulthood: attending a hip-hop concert, taking road trips with friends and dating.
  • In 2014, when Parliament was still discussing how to regulate medicinal marijuana, Mr. Carter and his mother went public with their story.
  • It is frustrating that Mr. Carter is well known, but it still hasnt got him anywhere, said Lucy Haslam, a medical marijuana activist.
  • Much of Mr. Carters supply is donated, but if the family were to pay out of pocket, it would cost 16,000 Australian dollars, or $12,500, a month to get as close to his needed dose as possible.
  • When Mr. Carter returned to Australia and stopped using marijuana, his tumor began growing again.

Opinion | Marijuana Can Save Lives

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Likewise, other researchers examined the link between medical cannabis and opiate use in a group of patients with chronic pain in New Mexico, one of the states hardest hit by the opioid crisis.
  • But more significant, both opiates and cannabis like all recreational drugs cause the release of dopamine in the brains reward pathway.
  • We would also expect to see a consistent sequence of drug abuse from cannabis to, say, opiates or cocaine, across different cultures.
  • For example, in Japan, where marijuana use is relatively rare, 83 percent of people who used recreational drugs did not begin with cannabis.
  • At the very least, lets not spend precious resources on a senseless cannabis crackdown especially when the evidence suggests that it would only worsen the opioid scourge and cost more American lives.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”topfeed-summary-list”]

  • Young people are far more likely to consider alcohol more harmful than marijuana, a new studyhas found.
  • And for people who declared they have used both marijuana and alcohol, 67.7 percent said alcohol was more harmful.
  • Jane Allen, a research public health analyst and the studys author, said this is the first study that measures perceptions of the harmfulness of marijuanaand alcohol.
  • In thePreventive Medicinejournal, where the study was published earlier this month, she said: – – The findings surprised me somewhat, because there is widespread acceptance of alcohol for adult recreational use, and in contrast, marijuana is classified at the federal level as a Schedule I drug.
  • A 16-year study of more than 65,000 Americans, published in the American Journal of Public Health, found that healthy marijuana users were not more likely to die earlier than healthy people who did not use cannabis.
